Why is it important to have your chlorella product tested and passed by the Japan Food Research Laboratories is a good question.

The Japanese Government has the highest standards in the world for testing and certifying the purity of chlorella.

Chlorella manufacturers are not able to sell their product in Japan without first passing the Japanese governments' strict protocol.

The most important part of the test is for heavy metal content. The results of this part of the testing is why less than 10 manufacturers of chlorella worldwide out of 100's of chlorella manufacturers are authorized to sell their chlorella products in the Japanese marketplace.

When the Japanese government tests for heavy metals a maximum of 20 parts per million of any of the following heavy metals is allowed.

Arsenic

Cadmium

Mercury

Aluminum

Since a limit of 20 parts per million is allowed the above heavy metals can be published as "Not Detected" by chlorella manufacturers who "Pass" the Japanese standards and are Certified for Sale in Japan.

"Chlorella captures toxic substances and disease-causing bacteria at an extraordinary speed. This useful and favorable property in the human body can be a problem in natural lakes or ponds, for example if cultivation is not controlled. Attracting different toxins, Chlorella can thus lose its helpful effects for human organisms if its detoxifying capacity has been considerably reduced. In other words, if the chlorella cells have already absorbed the toxins before they have been transformed into food supplements, it is certain that their detoxifying capacity will be greatly reduced."

"The efforts to cultivate chlorella in natural conditions and to treat it without rigorous supervision have always ended in deterioration of its quality. In order to constantly maintain the quality of the water in a lake,(natural or man-made for production) it would be necessary to prevent bacterial contamination from entering and also ensure an an optimal pH- this is almost impossible.

"In spite of the above conditions and strict control, it is not impossible to still detect tiny quantities of heavy metals in products derived from chlorella. Because chlorella has a tendency to absorb toxic materials, like a sponge, from its environment, it is not realistic to imagine that it could be totally devoid of pollutants. And if some people claim this, the truth of their analysis results can be questioned and even the subject of their research, which cannot be chlorella pyrenoidosa."

You can see why the Japanese government sets their limits at 20 parts per million. Chlorella absorbs these heavy metal toxins when it comes in contact with them. The good news is that when heavy metals come in contact with chlorella it binds to the chlorella so the minute heavy metals that are in chlorella tested and passed by the Japanese government stay in the chlorella.
